Self-Absorbed

Self-absorbed is defined as preoccupied with one's own feelings, interests, or situation. In the modern world, I believe it is difficult NOT to be somewhat preoccupied with one's self. It would be unhealthy to be so to the exclusion of others. Maybe 'selfish' could be attached as a side-effect? Could this be why empathy is said to be diminishing at an alarming rate?
