Recently, I went to a sandwich shop to visit with a friend. On the wall, I noticed a familiar image included in a mural. it was Daniel Johnston's "Hi, how are you?" that was originally painted on the side of Record Exchange on Guadalupe here in Austin, Texas. It has been vandalized and repaired many times over the years and was almost destroyed once by a new owner of the building it is attached to. Anyway, I mentioned it to my friend who replied she hadn't heard of Daniel Johnston or his mural. Then, days later, I drew some quick sketches and this one reminded me of that mural a bit. Anyway, without any more fanfare, let me say I had no conscious idea to re-imagine that rather simplistic piece. You can look it up for yourself and compare. This is a 4.75 by 3.5 inches gel pen with color pencil drawing on medium bond acid-free paper. It's just little ol' Original Jones Art keeping up the good fight here in northwest Austin, Texas. PS: I always thought calling such a simple sketch a mural was misleading. With that logic, every bit of graffiti and/or garbage scrawled on the side of a building or train car is a mural.
