This phrase is used to express that someone remains committed to a certain belief, value, or opinion regardless of external pressure to do otherwise. Now that's not to say that everyone should stay committed to their beliefs when those beliefs are cockeyed and/or just plain wrong but as we've seen lately, there seems to be a wide margin between what one person thinks is right or true and another.
